Talking about mental health is not a style statement. It’s not a trending hashtag to post about when something drastic happens. Mental health can be a lifelong issue for some people and in many cases one may not even know, or be able to explain what they’re going through, until professionally diagnosed.
Somebody suffering from a mental health issue is least likely to talk about it. Communication becomes a major barrier while addressing the emotions one feels while struggling with issues like depression or anxiety. In fact some people conceal their mental health issues well enough, that you may never see a problem at a surface level even if it’s staring right at you.
So what can you do? Be mindful about what you say to others. Don’t ever belittle someone and brush it off as a joke. Be empathetic & welcoming. If someone shares their emotions with you, do not ridicule them. Understand that there is more than one “right”. Understand where they’re coming from. Understand that there is more to what one reveals on a surface level. Be compassionate. Be kind.
